
Marke Newton
Born in Burnley in the north of England in 1973, Marke Newton is a contemporary artist based in Barcelona, Spain.
At the age of 16, he became the understudy of a classical portraitist. He graduated in Fine Art at Liverpool's John Moores University in 1995 and participated in the BP Portrait Award exhibition in the National Portrait Galleries of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
Since then, he has had solo and group shows in the U.K., France, Holland, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, the U.S.A.and China.
In the field of applied design, Marke Newton has worked as Art Director and Graphic Designer for clients worldwide such as Uniqlo or Citroën, Orange telecom, the newspapers Le Monde and Liberation. Since 2015 Newton has been art director,
designer and owner of the Spanish lighting company Goodnight Light.
Marke first made his own skateboard from fixing together old comic books and a broken roller-skate back when he was four years old. In the action sports world, he has for the last 25 years contributed his art direction to brands as varied as ETNIES (USA), Heroin Skateboards (USA), and Chapman Skateboards (USA), Newton was permanent art director for Metropolitan Skateboards (FR). For 6 years Newton was a regular contributor and sole illustrator for the London-based Grey skateboard Magazine and in the late nineties worked at the legendary London skate store SLAM CITY SKATES.
Iconic French record label Record Makers released a solo album by Marke REC.23 on their label.
His illustrations have been published in several international editorials including the Legendary The FACE (UK), Nuke (FR). Newton was also a regular contributor in the early days of Citizen K (FR), OBSESSION (FR), RELAX (JPN), and GQ (FR +JPN). For SWITCH magazine (JPN) Newton collaborated on a regular feature with the Japanese Novelist Keiichiro Hirano. Newton has painted the portraits of several celebrities such as the fashion designers Jean Charles de Castelbajac and Martine Sitbon, Musicians Yukihiro Takahashi, Sebastien Tellier, and most recently Kavinsky.
Newton’s work is held in both museum and private collections throughout the world.
